Explorer, artist, multilinguist, Pascal Hierholz, aka. Paisi, has always had a deep affinity for the myriad cultural landscapes of the world. Pascal is a Creative Director in advertising, design and digital communications, living in Indonesia since 2010.
Working in this field for the last 25 years, starting as an Art Director in Paris, led him to many different places around the world: North America, Europe, China, the Middle East and South East Asia.
It is in China that he acquired the name that has stuck: Pai Si, 湃思 “the one with waves of ideas”.
His experience spans from multinational agencies to local shops, successful campaigns for car or airline brands to food, cosmetics and social causes. His work has been awarded many times in every place he lived and worked.
Along the way he made an impressive amount of illustrated travel journals, tracing his feelings on paper, first with black ink then gradually mixed with watercolor. Many of these travel impressions have formed the material for his exhibitions.
His background as a man of communication has naturally lead him to play with the many facets of the different cultures he has learned to embrace, and this shows in his art.
He also likes to explore the richness of mediums like “goni” the fabric used in Indonesia to wrap construction goods, or rough cardboard along with canvas or paper, all always united by a vigorous black line made of Chinese ink.
Style: Indonesian/Balinese lyrical expressionism painting
Mediums: Travel books - chinese ink & watercolor, Lyrical expressionism - chinese ink, acrylic & oil
