Artist Statement
My art is a reflection of emotions, memories, and the quiet narratives that often go unspoken. I am drawn to themes of personal transformation, resilience, and the interplay between vulnerability and strength. Through a monochromatic palette of black, white, and gold, I explore contrast—not just in color, but in emotions and experiences.
I work with both digital and traditional mediums, layering ink, white charcoal, and gold leaf to create depth and texture. Symbols play a vital role in my visual language, carrying emotions that words often fail to express. My pieces are personal yet open-ended, inviting viewers to find their own meaning in the spaces between lines and shadows.
For me, art is a way of processing the intangible—a quiet dialogue between what is seen and what is felt.

Defina Sumardji is a Bali-based artist whose work delves into the emotional depths of memory, transformation, and silent narratives. She primarily works with a monochromatic palette of black, white, and gold, blending digital and traditional mediums to create layered, textural compositions.
Her artistic process often begins digitally before transitioning to physical materials like ink, white charcoal, and gold leaf, resulting in pieces that carry both precision and organic expression. Recurring symbols and intricate linework reflect her fascination with contrast—light and shadow, presence and absence, fragility and resilience. Through her art, she invites viewers into a space of quiet contemplation, where emotions unfold beyond words.

Rapid Cycle captures the sensation of being caught in an endless motion, much like a roller coaster with no clear beginning or end. The highs bring exhilaration, the lows arrive with an inevitable descent, and the in-between is filled with anticipation and uncertainty.There is fear in knowing the fall is coming, yet excitement in the climb. Over time, I have learned to embrace the rhythm, surrendering to the ebb and flow of it all. Instead of resisting, I let it roll.

These perceptions become the foundation of our mindset, often carried into adulthood without reflection or revision.Puzzled Mind explores this internalized conditioning—the way our thoughts, identities, and perceptions are shaped by past experiences, sometimes distorted by perspectives we never truly examined. The fragmented spirals suggest a looping cycle, a maze of inherited beliefs. Breaking free requires a conscious effort to unlearn, to question, and to redefine.This piece is the first in the Distorted series, a visual meditation on perception and reality.
