Artist Statement

Painting is the way I understand and respond to the world around me. My work is driven by curiosity, personal experience, and the constant process of adapting to change. I am interested in creating images that feel honest, capturing moments, emotions, and thoughts without needing to explain everything.

The human figure is central to my practice because I see it as a vessel of memory and identity. Each painting reflects the experiences, relationships, and environments that shape who we are. Rather than aiming for perfection, I embrace instinctive marks and an evolving process, allowing each work to develop naturally.

I see art as a conversation rather than a conclusion. Whether working independently or collaborating with other artists, I am interested in how different perspectives can exist within the same space. My practice continues to evolve through experimentation, challenging myself to stay open, adaptable, and curious while creating work that invites viewers to find their own meaning.

Artist Biography

Hi I'm Naken Wijaya, You can call me Naken. I’m a painter and graphic designer born in South Sumatra, 1994. I was raised in Jakarta and now live in Bali to further explore my artistic side. Immersed in the skateboarding culture, my creative journey began with graffiti in 2008. Since then, my art has transitioned into works on canvas, which has allowed me to discover a distinctive voice by blending elements of erotica and expressionism to create bold, emotionally charged works.

My creative exploration doesn’t stop there. Refusing to be confined to a single style, I continue to express myself through various mediums, including sculpture. Both social observations and personal experiences inspire my work, making each piece a reflection of my dynamic and ever-evolving perspective.

100 x 120 cmThe moment I saw the shibari show performance in real life for the first time, I captured it straight into a painting when I got home after the show.An attractive and impressive moment.When intensity, Red lighting, rope, sound, and the sweaty skin movement mixed it up.Shibari is a Japanese word that means "binding" or "tying" in most contexts, but is used to refer to this style of decorative bondage.Shibari is inspired by the samurai martial art of restraining captives with rope in the fastest amount of time, causing hemp rope to become a Japanese symbol of power. This is similar to how handcuffs are used to symbolize power and restrain partners in a BDSM context.Shibari, or Kinbaku, focuses on the aesthetics and display of the body: a symbolic or artistic (rather than ordinary physical) show of sexual power.
