Karya saya berakar dari pergolakan sosio-ekonomi di daerah saya pada era 1990-an, sebuah masa transisi dramatis dari masyarakat agraris menuju pariwisata yang diprogramkan oleh pemerintah. Perubahan kebijakan pembangunan ini secara khusus berdampak pada masyarakat pesisir, di mana tanah dan ruang hidup mereka secara bertahap diambil alih. Kasus marginalisasi yang dialami oleh para nelayan di tepi pantai menjadi titik awal dan sumber inspirasi utama bagi karya saya yang berjudul “Marginalisasi”.
Melalui karya ini, saya berusaha untuk menyuarakan realitas pembangunan hotel yang ironis, di mana para nelayan yang dulunya memiliki dan menggantungkan hidupnya pada wilayah pesisir, kini terpinggirkan dan hanya menjadi penonton di tanah kelahiran mereka sendiri. Lebih dari sekadar representasi visual, karya ini saya harapkan dapat berfungsi sebagai edukasi bagi masyarakat luas mengenai dampak pembangunan yang tidak inklusif dan pentingnya mempertimbangkan hak-hak serta keberlangsungan hidup komunitas lokal.
Sejak tahun 1989 hingga saat ini, perjalanan artistik saya juga diwarnai oleh perenungan mendalam tentang hakikat kehidupan. Sebuah pertanyaan filosofis tentang peran pikiran dalam mengarahkan jalan hidup manusia telah melahirkan dua konsep yang saling melengkapi. Konsep pertama adalah tentang pendewasaan, sebuah refleksi atas kemampuan pikiran untuk membawa manusia menuju kemajuan atau kemunduran. Pikiran juga memiliki kekuatan untuk merepresentasikan persepsi secara beragam, membentuk bagaimana kita memahami dan berinteraksi dengan dunia di sekitar kita.
Setelah melalui serangkaian kontemplasi yang berkelanjutan dan terinspirasi oleh pemahaman tentang sifat pikiran yang tak terkendali dalam ajaran Hindu, lahirlah konsep kedua, yaitu “Maya Rupa”. Konsep ini terwujud dalam lukisan-lukisan abstrak yang berusaha mengeksplorasi dan merepresentasikan sifat liar dan dinamis dari pikiran manusia. Proses penciptaan karya-karya “Maya Rupa” ini kemudian menjadi sebuah perjalanan pembebasan pribadi bagi saya, sebuah cara untuk memahami dan menerima kompleksitas pikiran itu sendiri.
Melalui kedua konsep ini, “Marginalisasi” dan “Maya Rupa”, karya-karya saya tidak hanya menjadi catatan atas realitas sosial dan pergolakan batin, tetapi juga sebuah ajakan untuk merenungkan hubungan antara pembangunan, komunitas, dan kekuatan pikiran dalam membentuk kehidupan kita.
My work is rooted in the socio-economic upheaval that took place in my region during the 1990s—a period of dramatic transition from an agrarian society to a government-directed tourism economy. This shift in development policy particularly impacted coastal communities, where land and living space were gradually taken over. The marginalization of local fishermen, once stewards of the shoreline, became the starting point and primary inspiration for my piece titled “Marginalization.”
Through this work, I seek to give voice to the irony of hotel development: where fishermen, who once depended on and belonged to these coastal areas, are now pushed to the margins—spectators in the very land of their birth. More than just a visual representation, this piece aims to serve as a form of public education, raising awareness about the consequences of non-inclusive development and the urgent need to consider the rights and livelihoods of local communities.
Since 1989, my artistic journey has also been shaped by a deep philosophical reflection on the nature of life itself. A fundamental question about the role of the mind in guiding human destiny led me to develop two complementary concepts. The first explores maturity of thought—a reflection on how the mind has the power to lead humanity toward either progress or regression. Our thoughts shape perceptions and influence the way we understand and engage with the world around us.
The second concept, “Maya Rupa”, emerged through continuous contemplation and is inspired by Hindu teachings on the untamed nature of the mind. This concept manifests in abstract paintings that attempt to explore and represent the wild, dynamic, and elusive character of human thought. The creation of the Maya Rupa series has become a personal path of liberation—an introspective journey toward accepting and understanding the mind’s inherent complexity.
Through these two concepts—“Marginalization” and “Maya Rupa”—my work stands not only as a reflection of social realities and inner struggles, but also as an invitation to contemplate the interconnectedness of development, community, and the power of the mind in shaping our lives.
Lahir di desa Cau Belayu, di tepi timur Tabanan, masa kecil seniman ini diwarnai oleh keakraban dengan alam dan tradisi. Pendidikan formalnya di sekolah dasar berjalan seiring dengan rutinitas menggembala itik di hamparan sawah yang membentang. Di tengah kesederhanaan itu, benih kecintaan pada seni mulai tumbuh secara organik. Sebuah momen penting terjadi ketika ia beristirahat di Pura Bedugul. Terinspirasi oleh suasana sakral dan bentuk-bentuk visual di sekitarnya, ia mulai menggoreskan imajinasinya di atas permukaan dengan arang bekas upacara dan pecahan batu bata. Di tempat inilah, secara otodidak, ia mulai mengasah bakat melukisnya. Selama masa sekolah dasar, di samping kegiatan melukis, ia juga aktif mempelajari seni tabuh tradisional Bali.
Hasil dari jerih payah menggembala itik ia sisihkan untuk membeli buku gambar. Relief-relief yang menghiasi pura-pura di sekitarnya menjadi sumber pembelajaran dan inspirasi. Setelah menamatkan pendidikan dasar, ia melanjutkan ke SMP dan kemudian menempuh pendidikan seni formal selama empat tahun di Sekolah Menengah Seni Rupa (SMSR) di Denpasar. Dedikasi dan bakatnya membawanya meraih beasiswa untuk melanjutkan studi di Sekolah Tinggi Seni Rupa Indonesia (STSRI) di Yogyakarta. Di lingkungan kampus yang dinamis dan berkat dukungan serta semangat dari teman-teman, baik di dalam maupun di luar kampus, ia semakin memantapkan langkahnya di dunia seni. Pada tahun 1989, di Yogyakarta, ia mengambil keputusan untuk tidak hanya menjadi seorang guru lukis/sketsa dan seniman, sebuah komitmen yang ia pegang teguh hingga masa purna baktinya. Selama perjalanan karirnya, ia telah menghasilkan lebih dari seratus karya, meliputi sketsa dan lukisan yang beragam. Selain eksplorasi medium cat di atas kanvas, ia juga memiliki ketertarikan yang kuat pada eksperimen seni menggunakan media plastik.
Born in the village of Cau Belayu, on the eastern edge of Tabanan, this artist’s childhood was shaped by a close connection to nature and tradition. His early formal education in elementary school ran parallel with his daily routine of herding ducks across the vast rice fields. Amid this simplicity, his love for art began to grow naturally.
A pivotal moment occurred during a break at Pura Bedugul, where the sacred atmosphere and visual elements surrounding him sparked his imagination. Using remnants of ceremonial charcoal and pieces of brick, he began sketching intuitively. It was in this temple setting that he began to hone his painting skills as a self-taught artist. Alongside painting, he also studied traditional Balinese percussion (tabuh) during his primary school years.
He saved the modest earnings from duck herding to buy sketchbooks, while the intricate reliefs adorning nearby temples became his first visual teachers. After completing elementary school, he continued to junior high and then pursued formal art education for four years at the High School of Fine Arts (SMSR) in Denpasar. His talent and dedication earned him a scholarship to continue his studies at the Indonesian College of Fine Arts (STSRI) in Yogyakarta.
Immersed in the dynamic academic environment and encouraged by a supportive community of peers, both within and beyond the campus, he firmly established his path in the art world. In 1989, while in Yogyakarta, he made a defining decision—to dedicate himself not only as an artist but also as a teacher of painting and sketching, a commitment he upheld throughout his career until retirement.
Over the years, he has produced more than a hundred works, including a wide range of sketches and paintings. In addition to his exploration of paint on canvas, he has also developed a strong interest in experimenting with plastic as an artistic medium.
